Finished Verb Classes

I have finished creating the pages for the ten verb classes. These are both the thematic (Classes 1, 4, 6, and 10) and athematic (Classes 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9) verbs. Each page shows the full conjugations for the tenses of the present system, namely the present, the imperfect, the optative, and the imperative for each class of verb. Each tense is shown in both the active and middle voice. I have mostly followed Hart’s examples. Sometimes, where he uses the same verb for the active and middle voices, I have tried to find different examples. But I have used Whitney’s The Root Verb Forms to look these up, and it seems from my inexperienced perspective that many, if not most, verbs take both active and middle voices depending on time-period (e.g. epic vs. vedas) or author. So this is perhaps the reason why Hart often uses the same verb for both.

As for the nouns, a separate menu for verbs has been created on the top bar, each of the class pages is accessible from there.

The verb section is not however done. Topics coming up include participles (present and past), the causative, and of course the passive. We will see if I decide to include the last three topics from Hart’s book: the infinitive, the perfect, and the gerundives. I probably will, but already pace of this website “development” has slowed down. So I want to keep my sites lowish.

    A Burst of Activity

Yesterday, I finished posting the verb pages I have to date in my local documents. So far I am up to the last or second to last chapter in Hart’s grammar. I have yet to do the Perfect, which will be the last page in Verbs. Yesterday, I added the Past Participles, the Continuative, the…

    More on Verbs

There is a lot of information in Hart’s grammar on verbs. The ten class and the present system of tense conjugations are just one part, but there’s also participles both present and past, the passive, the causative, continuatives, and more. It would have been ideal to link all those pages here within the same drop-down…

    Perfect and Practice Texts

I have added the Perfect Tenses from Hart’s chapter 29. This leaves one more chapter (The Gerundives) and the appendix (The Aorist and some secondary conjugations). I put the Perfect, of course, under the “Verb” drop down menu. As the menu was getting quite bloated or long, I tried reorganizing it. I created a page…

  • Beginning to Enter Verbs

After a long pause of a month, I’ve returned and begun to enter the verbs. I did classes I and II today. Formatting issues are different for the verb pages, and it took me a while to figure out a system to streamline the conversion from Open Office doc to the Word Press page. If…

  • About This Site

In the course of refreshing my meagre knowledge of Sanskrit, I recently began reviewing George L. Hart’s A Rapid Sanskrit Method. I found this book the most useful when I was first learning the language, and reviewing it, I came to remember what a superb resource it is. While Whitney’s thorough and comprehensive Sanskrit Grammar is an in-depth reference book, it is not…
